The lake lies between the villages of Tolovitsa and Rabisha, at the north-eastern foot of the Rabisha hill.
How it was formed
When the layers of the earth shifted, a hollow was formed, and its bottom later filled with water: a rare natural anomaly. The lake has almost no catchment and no outflow: the water gathered in it does not drain away naturally.
Geological drilling shows that the bed is lined with marls, sandstones and clays that do not let water through, covered with silt. It has been proved that the lake is of tectonic origin.
The old beliefs
In the past people thought the lake bottomless and believed that it both springs and drains. That it springs they judged from the water: sweet, without smell and clear. They were also sure that the springs above the villages of Rabisha and Bela begin in the lake: the Rabisha spring is only half a kilometre away and lies lower than the lake.
According to folk belief there are huge hollows full of water in the mountains, and wood nymphs, dragons and devils live in the waters.
What people do at the lake
The lake is good for surfing and swimming, for shooting waterfowl and for fishing for carp, silver carp, grass carp and catfish. It is also a pleasant place to camp.
