The small museum shows 520 exhibits, and its collection holds another 2,500, from the most attractive part of the fauna and flora of north-western Bulgaria.
What you will see
Golden eagle, roller, vulture, barn owl, black stork, falcon, wild boar, dormouse, roe deer, red deer, otter, pine marten, fox, wolf and tortoise are a small part of the collection. Many of the specimens are listed in the Red Data Book of Bulgaria.
In the recent past the forests of the area were also home to the largest European cat, the Eurasian lynx.
Plants found only in this part of the country are shown as well: orchids, Sempervivum erythraeum, purple knapweed, Stefchov's stonecrop, Tommasini's crocus, Serbian ramonda and Bulgarian winter aconite. There are also photographs of views of the town and the rocks.
A museum and science
A department of the museum studies the life and migration of birds. Students and researchers are frequent visitors: here they find photographic records, summarised data from field studies and a rich specialised library.
